The End of Coins

Today is a sad day for chocolate as we know it. Sadly the chocolate franchise known as Cadbury has stopped production of the golden chocolate coins. The Telegraph journalist Harry Wallop discovered this fact after some heavy digging into the Cadbury company. With no announcement and seemingly no reason for the products discontinuation an investigation into cadbury was made.

Back in 2010 an american company called Kraft Foods bought the cadbury company for £11.5 billion. From that point onwards the company started to rebrand Cadbury’s and change all their well loved english chocolate recipes. As well as the company face lift Kraft Foods also decided to collaborate the well known brand of chocolate with other big snack food companies. These company collaborations helped with the facelift and helped the new Cadburys create many more “now well known” products.

With the company changing hands and having the face lift, Kraft Foods also decided to bring out new product like the Marvellous Creations chocolate range and the Oreo and Ritz collaboration bars. Kraft Foods since the buy out has now changed the beloved Cadbury franchise from an English brand of chocolate to an americanised chocolate franchise.

But back to the original topic, the question on all our lips is “just what did happen to our beloved chocolate coins?”. When Kraft was asked about the discontinuation of the fun festive stocking filler they stated that ‘wrapping foil around the coin-shaped chocolates was ‘fiddly’ work’. As well as this Kraft also stated that ‘the coins were not as profitable as other products because they could not market them in the ‘Cadbury purple’.

The chocolate maker also believes shoppers have switched to cheaper, own-brand versions sold at supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl causing its own sales to decline.

A spokesman from Cadbury itself also commented saying ‘We are sorry to see the coins go, but that’s business,’ .

But do you agree with the discontinuation of the beloved product? Here are some of your thoughts on the story:
